New Elections In Greece Result In Victory for Mitsotakis' ND Party

ND Wins Majority in Parliament

Mitsotakis Pledges to Continue Reforms

According to official results released by the Greek Interior Ministry, Greece's New Democracy (ND) party, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has emerged victorious in the country's June 2023 snap parliamentary elections. With almost all votes counted, the ND has secured a majority in the 300-seat Parliament, securing 158 seats, surpassing the 151-seat threshold required for a governing majority.

The ND's victory is seen as a strong endorsement of Mitsotakis's government and its policies. The party campaigned on a platform of continuing economic reforms, addressing the cost-of-living crisis, and strengthening Greece's international standing. Mitsotakis has pledged to use the ND's parliamentary majority to push forward with his agenda, which includes reducing taxes, cutting government spending, and privatizing state-owned enterprises.

The main opposition party, the left-wing SYRIZA, led by Alexis Tsipras, came in second place with 122 seats. SYRIZA had campaigned on a platform of reversing the ND's austerity measures and increasing social spending. However, the party's message did not resonate with a majority of voters.

The remaining seats in Parliament were divided among several smaller parties, including the far-right Golden Dawn and the center-left Movement for Change. These parties are expected to play a role in shaping the ND's legislative agenda, as the government will need to seek support from other parties to pass legislation.

Mitsotakis, who has been in power since 2019, expressed his gratitude to the Greek people for their support. In a speech after the election results were announced, he pledged to continue working for the country's progress and prosperity.
