The highly anticipated AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM) is poised to enter production at an accelerated rate this year, according to Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall. The secretive missile has been in development for several years and is intended to replace the current Raytheon AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM).
The JATM program was initiated through a rapid acquisition project by the Air Force and Navy, highlighting the urgent need for a next-generation air-to-air missile. The AIM-260 is designed to be more capable and effective than the AMRAAM, with improved range, accuracy, and maneuverability.
The production of the AIM-260 marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the U.S. Air Force and Navy air combat capabilities. The missile is expected to enhance the ability of pilots to engage and defeat enemy aircraft in various combat scenarios, including long-range air-to-air engagements.
The accelerated production schedule for the JATM underscores the importance of this program for the U.S. military. The successful deployment of the AIM-260 will provide a significant advantage in maintaining air superiority and protecting U.S. airspace and allies.
